Synopsis:

True love is like ghosts, which everyone talks about and few have seen…

Basil Irwin is a mild-mannered arts correspondent by day, and burgeoning necromancer by night. The trouble is he’s yet to encounter a ghost, so all his magic could yet prove useless.

Jon Dwyer is a psychic medium, capable of interacting with - and even destroying - the dead, but his power comes at a price: the living fear him.

When Basil and Jon meet over a rumored haunting, they agree to work together. But when the ghost proves itself not only real but also insanely homicidal, Basil and Jon are caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse, and whatever feelings they might have for one-another have to take a back seat to a desperate fight for their very survival…

My Review

Haunted Hearts is a short and sweet paranormal fantasy with touches of romance novella, written by A.K. Faulkner, and which shares universe with the Inheritance series. A haunted house will be the place where our two characters will meet, intertwining not only their jobs, but also their hearts.

Basil, an arts correspondent by day and necromancer by night, he still needs to find a ghost, so he can prove his magic; and Jon, a psychic medium who can interact and destroy the dead, but at the price of not being liked by the living ones. Both meet over a rumoured haunting, and agree to collaborate; however, the ghost soon proves to be a insane homicidal, they will have to play a difficult cat-mouse game where their feelings will be tested.

A novella which is excellently paced, jumping between both characters' POVs, first painting a brief portrait of each one, and reserving the most intense part for the ending of the book. The haunting part is quite interesting, playing with the classical fear of what if a ghost is evil, and you can feel how they start caring for each other while trying to survive.

While it's not the kind of novella I would pick myself, but if you like a good paranormal romance, it's a sweet bite that you can devour in one sit. If you end being curious, I also recommend picking the Inheritance series, by the same author.

A.K. Faulkner

Amelia Faulkner was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, and sprouted upward in short order. The ground around Thame is reasonably mucky, especially in the winter, and she can’t be blamed for wanting to get away from it.

Raised on a steady diet of Star Trek and Doctor Who, Amelia stood no chance in not becoming a grade-A geek. She has sat on the board of the British Fantasy Society, contributed fiction and fluff to various published roleplaying games, and written non-fiction for SciFiNow and SFX Magazines. For every positive there is an equal and opposite negative, and Amelia is forced to admit that she loves Wild Wild West.

In her spare time she enjoys travel, photography, walking her Corgi, and trying to convince her friends to replay the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game with all the Goblins decks.
