Synopsis:
In the high-stakes conclusion to the Micah Grey Trilogy from the USA Today-bestselling author of Dragonfall, Micah faces his own magical power, nebulous alliances, and a conspiracy that unravels all the way to the Royal Palace.
The gifted can’t hide their talents forever. But monsters await when they step into the light...
Micah's Chimaera powers are growing, just as dark visions threaten to overwhelm him. Drystan is forced to take him to the Royal Physician, but can they really trust the doctor? Especially when he gets Micah hooked on a mysterious medicine, and a close friend is revealed to be his spy…
Meanwhile, violent unrest is sweeping the country as anti-royalist factions fight to be heard. When a royal secret and an attack on Chimaera brings Micah into the heart of the conflict, he and his friends must fight an ancient sect that aims to spread terror once more. The fate of all Chimaera—and the world—hangs in the balance.
In this satisfying and thrilling conclusion to their inventive fantasy trilogy, L.R. Lam raises the stakes like never before.
My Review
Masquerade is the third and final book in the gaslamp fantasy series Micah Grey series, written by L.R. Lam and re-released by DAW Books. An instalment that raises the stakes a level over the two previous, building on the political context that was already laid in those books, delivering an epic conclusion that finally answers most of our questions, while still keeping identity at its center, rewarding us, the readers, with a last time with the rich characters created by Lam.
In comparison with the previous novels, the scope of this one is much bigger, still keeping the whole spectacle as a main element (with fewer performances), but focusing much more on the political unrest that is shaking Eliada, amid the growth of the Foresters and how the blurred man is acting. We could say that Micah has found his wonderful family among Drystan, Cyan and Maske, but the illness coming from his Chimaera powers is making him depend of Pinecrest's medicine.
After an attack on other Chimaera brings Micah into the heart of the conflict, he and his friends will be forced to fight against a cult that threatens to spread terror and eradicate the Chimaera; a race against time to discover more about the fate of the Chimaera and how to save all of them.
At the core, we still have the same group that constitutes that weird found family around Micah, a group that, at this point, you absolutely love as a reader; it's impossible to not suffer as we see Micah struggling with his powers while becoming dependent on Pinecrest, but still we will feel the tenderness of the relationship between Drystan and Micah. Personally, I also enjoyed how Lam made two characters whose arcs make me have mixed feelings, especially with Pinecrest (can't discuss much more because, you know, spoilers); Lily's one is deliciously nuanced.
At this point in the series, what we see is how all those small worldbuilding details that Lam threw around are actually really relevant to understanding how the plot is advancing; there's much subtle foreshadowing that was already introduced in the previous books that once you reach this conclusion, all the pieces start to fit together.
In terms of pacing, Masquerade is probably the most irregular of the trilogy, mostly due to how many oniric visions are introduced in this case; said that, trust me that Lam will pull you to the edge of the seat on many occasions. Also, avoiding spoilers, but the ending is exactly what our characters deserved after this long journey.
Masquerade is an excellent conclusion to what has become one of my favourite fantasy series, Micah Grey, especially due to how naturally it treats subjects like identity, queerness, and belonging, while gifting us with a cast of characters that you end up loving. A serious recommendation!
