Synopsis:
adie Grace is wanted for witchcraft, dead (or alive). And every hired gun in Kansas is out to collect the bounty on her head, including bona fide witch hunter Old Tom and his mysterious, mute ward, Rabbit.
On the road to Burden County, they’re joined by two vagabond cowboys with a strong sense of adventure – but no sense of purpose – and a recently widowed schoolteacher with nothing left to lose. As their posse grows, so too does the danger.
Racing along the drought-stricken plains in a stolen red stagecoach, they encounter monsters more wicked than witches lurking along the dusty trail. But the crew is determined to get that bounty, or die trying.
My Review
Red Rabbit is a folk historical horror novel, written by Alex Grecian, and which has been published in the UK by Solaris Books. A ragtag group that will be tracking down a witch on a wild west full of ghosts and demons, in a choral novel where Grecian uses a great variety of points of view to weave an incredible story with an episodic taste that is fun and creepy in equal parts.
There's a bounty offered for Sadie Grace's head for witchery; every hired gun in Kansas is ready to collect the bounty, including the seasoned witch hunter Old Tom and his mysterious and mute ward, Rabbit. The pair will be joined by two gunslingers without any other motivation than the sense of adventure and justice and a recently widowed teacher; an unlikely group that will face different dangers and adventures, determined to reclaim the bounty (which Old Tom is strangely fixated in, sure he has eliminated the witch from distance), in a weird west infested by spirits and demons.
But Grecian not only puts us on the skin of our ragtag crew, but also introduces more perspectives, such as the one from the own Sadie Grace, painting a really interesting story that while it keeps the bounty at the heart, it has a bunch of disseminated threads that eventually play a role in our band adventure. Each one has a distinctive voice, adding to this choral play in their own way.
The worldbuilding is excellent, and probably the aspect I enjoyed more of Red Rabbit. Not only we have that western touch of the desolated plains and the gunslingers, but Grecian also introduces historical elements without forgetting to reflect the racism that was still present at those moments; together with this, folkloric and horror elements are woven together to create an amazing blend, that together with an agile pacing, makes this book a compulsive read.
If you are looking for a spooky read with western elements, Red Rabbit is a perfect choice. You will love travelling with the crew, and suffer with them each time a danger is about to harm them; Grecian has nailed the adventure sensation of the novel, and I absolutely loved it!
